In our experience garden work keeps us grounded in a very literal way, and staying grounded is something we all yearn for - now more than ever. Everyone who has ever worked with their hands in good, fertile soil can attest to that - there's a certain sense of peace and beauty that just organically surfaces when you take part in gardening.
As many of us have more time on our hands than usual - we would like to encourage you to grow with seeds! One of the upsides are that this process allows kids to take part in the growing process from start to finish, and to feel the sense of accomplishment that comes with tending to and developing plants. Growing with your own seeds is also extremely beneficial for insects like honey bees! This is due to the fact that most annuals that are purchased at garden centers are treated with systemic fertilizers, and therefore every part of the plant is laced with pesticides that actually harm our beneficial insects instead of nourishing them.
For those of you who already grow with seeds as opposed to plants, or who want to experiment this year - we have a few inspirational, local seed companies right here in Montana and the Flathead Valley. Did you know that local Organic Terrapin Farm is a seed grower for the Organic Seed Alliance of Triple Divide Seeds? You can shop Triple Divide Seeds online or directly at local natural food stores. Check out Here for a store close to you, and while you do - enjoy reading about local seed grower Judy Owsowitz. Seed harvesting is truly a labor of love! Another wonderful option is the Good Seed Company, they're currently on pause until April 17th, but check back then for some great seeds.
If you're looking for more fun gardening ideas or just for support – we highly recommend listening to Master Gardener Elisabeth Mollica’s weekly radio show. Tune in to KGEZ AM-600 between 9:30-10am. If you live outside the broadcasting range of this local station, download their app on your phone and check it out this way!
It's no surprise that healthy skin goes hand in hand with a healthy body, the glow of beauty comes both from a natural skin-care routine, as much as it comes from a strong internal sense of well-being and good health. It's almost impossible for healthy eating habits and life habits to not contribute a positive reflection through your skin. We seldom stop to realize just how connected we are as individual beings - mind, body, soul, internal, external, etc. When you care for your body on the inside, as well as the outside, this can help you better tend to your mind and soul - and to be the best you that you can be!
With that, we wish you all the best of health and well-being.
Happy gardening, and fulfillment in everything you do during this time of rest!
