How to Exfoliate Your Skin (And Why It Matters)

If your skin looks dull and dry despite your attempts to revitalize it with moisturizers, serums, and sprays, it might be time to exfoliate.

Keeping your skin moisturized is a more complicated process than you might think — just read our blog post on the difference between dry and dehydrated skin. To keep your skin soft, dewy, and radiant, you need to exfoliate. By exfoliating properly, you can remove the barrier of dead skin cells that clogs your pores and leaves your skin looking dull and flaky — and you can encourage fresh cell turnover, which will make you look younger and more hydrated.

Exfoliation is an ancient practice, dating back to the ancient Egyptians, and there are plenty of ways to do it. Today, we’re sharing two methods we recommend to keep your skin happy and healthy, even in the driest weather.

Method 1: Dry Brushing

Dry brushing is the perfect method to eliminate the dead skin cells that cling to your body. Dry brushing has been popular in Russia, Turkey, and Scandinavia for centuries, and it’s still a popular practice in many European spas. It prevents dry skin buildup and stimulates skin renewal, transforming your skin from dull to radiant. Dry brushing also stimulates circulation and tightens the skin, which can help manage cellulite and prevent premature aging. And if those aren’t enough reasons to try it, it also stimulates the lymphatic system to detox your skin. How could you go wrong?

How to:

Dry brushing comes from the heart. No, seriously. The golden rule of dry brushing is to brush from your heart to your arms and legs in circular rotations. That way, you can stimulate and open up your lymphatic system in the correct order. We recommend brushing each area seven times in gentle circular motions. Method 2: Jojoba Wax Beads

This natural, non-abrasive exfoliant will take your face from dry and flaky to soft and glowy. Jojoba beads are often recommended for sensitive skin, but they’re a great option for any skin type. At a microscopic level, jojoba beads are polished, round, and smooth, so they’ll never scratch your skin. But they will do an excellent job of gently buffing away dead skin cells. Jojoba beads are so gentle that you can use them to exfoliate your lips or other sensitive parts of your face — just remember to avoid your eye area. And unlike microbead alternatives, jojoba beads are environmentally friendly! Discover the power of Jojoba Beads in our Gentle Glow Facial Polish.

Method 3: Garnet Gemstone Powder

This fine powder is a much safer and gentler alternative to larger crystals, but it still packs a punch. And some say garnet can help release emotional and energetic blockages and cleanse your chakras, making this the perfect product for all skin types and anyone who craves the balancing qualities of garnet crystals. Discover the power of this ingredient in our Microdermabrasion Masque & Scrub.

How to:

Try our Microdermabrasion Masque & Scrub! Garnet gemstone powder will gently polish off even the clingiest dead skin cells, while keeping your new skin soft and bringing out its natural glow. Just apply the mask to damp skin, let it dry, wash it off, and watch your skin shine. Once you try it, you’ll never go back.
