Series Part 4: Niacinamide & Ferulic Acid
You Asked, We Listened: Niacinamide and Ferulic Acid for the Night
Over the past weeks, Klaus and I have walked with you through the ingredients we trust most. Tripeptides, the quiet messengers that encourage your skin to rebuild. Hyaluronic Acid, the moisture reservoir that keeps it soft and supple. And Vitamin C, the everyday protector that brings brightness. Today, as the nights grow longer here in northern Montana, we want to close the series with two ingredients that belong especially to the evening: Niacinamide and Ferulic Acid.
So many of you asked us for these two in a formulation – and we listened.
But Klaus and I have never added an ingredient simply because it is trending. We always ask the same question first: Is it as natural as possible and healthy for your body and where does it truly belong? In which formula will it work best, and alongside what? For Niacinamide and Ferulic Acid the answer surprised us. It was not in a daytime cream at all. It was in the quiet hours when your skin is resting.
At a glance
• Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) evens tone, refines the look of pores, calms redness, and strengthens the skin barrier
• Ferulic Acid, sourced from rice bran, is a plant antioxidant that protects skin and helps other actives stay effective
• Both are gentle, with no purging and no adjustment period
• Both do their best work overnight, on freshly exfoliated skin
Niacinamide: The Steady Balancer
Niacinamide is a water-soluble form of Vitamin B3, a vitamin your body already relies on for many everyday processes in its cells. Applied to the skin, it is one of the most thoroughly studied ingredients in skincare, and what we love about it is how it works: quietly and steadily, supporting the skin's own repair rather than forcing a dramatic change.
What it does for your skin
• Evens tone: It reduces the transfer of melanin to your skin cells, so dark spots gradually fade and your complexion looks more even.
• Refines pores: By helping to regulate oil, it minimizes the look of pores and reduces shine.
• Strengthens the barrier: It encourages your skin to make more ceramides, the natural lipids that keep moisture in and irritants out.
• Calms redness: Its gentle soothing properties make it kind to sensitive, reactive, and blemish-prone skin.
• Supports firmness: Over time, it supports collagen, helping skin stay firm and resilient.
What Klaus appreciates most is how ‘well it gets along with others’. Niacinamide is stable, works comfortably alongside most other actives, and is well tolerated even by very sensitive skin. And unlike retinoids, it does not cause purging. There is no difficult beginning phase, only steady progress from the first use. Thus, it fits well in our formulation philosophy. a
Ferulic Acid: The Protector That Makes Everything Better
Plants make Ferulic Acid in their cell walls to defend themselves against sunlight and environmental stress. You will find it in rice bran, oats, and wheat, and ours is sourced from rice bran. On your skin, it plays a remarkably similar role. As an antioxidant, it neutralizes free radicals, the unstable molecules created by UV light, pollution, and everyday stress that slowly break down collagen and leave skin looking tired.
What it does for your skin
• Defends: It helps protect skin cells from oxidative damage, the kind that shows up over time as fine lines and loss of firmness.
• Brightens: It helps slow tyrosinase, the enzyme involved in melanin production, supporting a more even complexion.
• Soothes: Its mild calming properties make it suitable even for skin prone to redness.
• Strengthens its partners: This is where Ferulic Acid truly shines.
I often think of what Stephen Covey wrote about synergy: a good team does not simply add up its talents, it brings out the best in every member. Ferulic Acid is that kind of team member. Research shows that it stabilizes antioxidants such as Vitamins C and E, helping them last longer and work harder. In our masque, it works right beside Vitamin E, Niacinamide, and Tripeptides, so the whole formula benefits from its protection.
Why Overnight?
Well, while you sleep, your skin shifts from daytime defense into repair. Cell turnover increases, blood flow to the skin rises, and the barrier restores itself. It is also when your skin is most receptive to nourishing ingredients. Both Niacinamide and Ferulic Acid support exactly this kind of slow, steady renewal, so it made sense to us to let them work during those undisturbed hours.
And to open that window even further? Fresh, exfoliated skin. When dead surface cells are gently cleared away, actives can absorb more fully and do their best work.
Why the Base Matters, Once Again
When we researched these two ingredients, we found that most brands deliver them in thin, watery serums. We did not want to do that. For over 40 years, Kettle Care has been built on rich, concentrated, deeply nourishing formulas, and this one is no different.
Our Restorative + Brightening Overnight Masque begins with Cocoa Butter, the deeply moisturizing anchor of the formula. Vitamin E adds antioxidant support for overnight repair. Rosehip Seed Oil and Panthenol nourish and soften, and Gotu Kola, a longtime Kettle Care favorite, helps strengthen the skin. Into that base, Klaus added Niacinamide, Ferulic Acid, and Tripeptides. As we said at the start of this series, it is like planting in good soil. The seed matters, but it is the soil that lets it grow.
If you would like to read more about how this masque came to be, Klaus and I shared the story of its formulation here.
Your Evening Ritual
1. Cleanse. Begin with freshly cleansed, dry skin, free of makeup and oil.
2. Exfoliate gently. Take a few extra minutes with one of our gentle exfoliants so the actives can absorb fully.
3. Apply about 30 minutes before bed. Smooth the masque over your face, neck, and décolleté. Use a thin layer for oily skin and a richer layer for dry or mature skin. With time, your skin will tell you how much it needs.
4. Sleep, then wake. In the morning, wash your face gently and follow your usual routine.
Use it two to three evenings a week. As always, try any new product on a small patch of skin first.
A helpful note: you may have read that Niacinamide and Vitamin C should never be used together. That concern came from older research that does not reflect how today's skincare is made or used. The two are widely considered compatible, so you can enjoy your Vitamin C in the morning and Niacinamide at night without worry.
The Circle, Day and Night
With this post, our series comes full circle, and so does your routine:
• By day: our Hyaluronic & Vitamin C Moisturizer hydrates, brightens, and protects, with Tripeptides encouraging your skin to rebuild.
• By night: our Restorative + Brightening Overnight Masque evens, calms, and strengthens, with Tripeptides continuing that same quiet work while you rest.
Five trusted ingredients, two simple steps. Then give it time. Most people begin to see a real difference after six to eight weeks of steady use, and the results keep building from there.
Thank you for asking us about these ingredients, for your patience while we found the right formulation for them, and for following along with this series. So much of what we make begins with a question from one of you, and that is something we never take for granted.
